Eco-friendly Initiatives

Helping one person at a time. In addition to our daily green and eco-resort initiatives, Recreo established a non-profit foundation specifically offering support to our neighbors in the El Jobo and La Cruz communities.Bolanos Bay Foundation, a Recreo led United States and Costa Rica non-profit, provides access to basic needs, play and wishes for children faced with economic and/or health challenges in Latin America to enrich their lives with hope, spirit and happiness. Through our programs and initiatives, we will give children a better learning environment by improving the learning conditions, by renovating the school and implementing new educational programs. More information on Bolanos Bay Foundation can be found at www.bolanosbayfoundation.orgWe strive to follow the principles of ecotourism, with equal emphasis on energy conservation, ecology and community. We embrace Costa Rican traditions and do all we can to give back to the local community.

* Community Outreach. Recreo is located just outside a small fishing village called El Jobo. Since its inception, Recreo has been committed to giving back to the local community. Though water aquifers are abundant in the area, water distribution has been a problem for the town. Recreo has paid for a new 300 ft well and pump for El Jobo and a new holding tank for the school, supplying approximately 700 people with water. Recreo has donated ten bicycles to the El Jobo Police Department for local patrolling. Recreo has also sponsored "Clean Up El Jobo," a program encouraging local school children to pick up litter with their mothers after school, providing them with an understanding of the need for a cleaner environment. Recreo hires only local Costa Ricans, for whom it offers housing, insurance, education in English and other applicable courses. Recreo plans to donate a portion of all profits to local charities. Plans are also in place to institute an El Jobo Recycling Program.

* Pampered Volunteer Program. Recreo encourages its guests to volunteer during their stay in Costa Rica. Recreo arranges volunteer programs from building schools to aiding the underprivileged to protecting endangered animals. Recreo thanks guests for their hard work and dedication with a complimentary massage. Please contact our personal concierge for volunteer opportunities through Recreo and Bolanos Bay Foundation to participate in our current initiatives while you are at Recreo.

* Plant a Tree Program. Sign up to plant a tree during your stay at Recreo and do your part to reduce your carbon footprint! Costa Rica launched a national tree-planting program in 2007 in an effort to ward off global warming and reduce its net carbon emissions. Nearly 6.5 million trees were planted in 2007, which would absorb 111,000 tons of carbon dioxide a year. They aim to plant 7 million trees in 2008, and you can do your part to help during your stay at Recreo.

* On-site and locally grown produce. Recreo grows bananas and mangoes on-site for guests to enjoy. Recreo has plans for growing additional varieties of fruits as well as an on-site herb garden. Recreo also welcomes guests with an all-natural locally produced thirst-quencher! The delicious welcome drink is made of a passion fruit called "maracuya," which is grown vineyard-style on a farm just 10 miles away.

* Local sourcing. Recreo gives back to the economy and conserves valuable energy and resources by sourcing all products within a 200-mile radius whenever possible.

* No grass or harmful fertilizers. Recreo has no grass on-site which means no lawn mowers to pollute the air and use precious energy and no disturbing noise pollution for our guests. Recreo does not use chemical fertilizers and weed killers, which also helps to protect the environment.

* Environmentally responsible land planning. Recreo seeks to conserve its natural environment by developing only 12% of its total land area. Recreo's multiple individual structures also leave more environmentally friendly footprints than do resorts comprised of one large megastructure.

* Responsible building practices. Recreo's construction methods minimize the removal of vegetation and landscaping efforts are in place to re-introduce natural environments to each lot post-construction.

* Alternate energy sources. Recreo is committed to finding and utilizing alternate energy sources including wind power and solar energy.

* Sheet and towel changing cards. A card is provided in each room asking guests to consider using their linens more than once.

* Water-saving bathroom cards. A card is provided in each bathroom asking guests to consider shortening their shower time in order to conserve water.

* Organic cotton towels and linens. Organic cotton products don't use petrochemicals or add VOCs to the air, which helps air quality in guest rooms where they are used. Towels and linens that are a blend of cotton and synthetic fabrics aren't sustainable because of their reliance on petrochemicals.

* Organic bath & spa products. Recreo's bath and spa products use only the highest quality in certified organic ingredients.

* Line Drying. Recreo conserves energy by outdoor line drying as much as possible, which utilizes natural wind and gives clothes and linens a sun-dried freshness.

* Bicycles and electric carts. Bicycles and electric carts are provided at each villa to use in lieu of gasoline-powered vehicles.

* National park preserves. Recreo's surrounding area boasts some of the largest land preserves in all of Costa Rica.
